I don't understand why the hysteria about registering your sim cards. We are so used to running things wrongly in Zed to a point where we think that's the norm. Information on you are all over the place, banks, school, hospital, passport office, boma (unless you have no NRC), on laptops and desktops, name it. You CAN't hide, not in this day and age. Also many times these mobile phones are used for criminal activities and simply thrown in a pit latrine somewhere in the bundus. Please register, it actually works to your benefit. There is nothing secret in this world system. Anyway am off to the market...need a zamtel mo moni sim card and hopefully find something to cook. Good day.

The whole idea of this registration is to control information flow. It's actually meant to curtail our freedom of expression. Now that they have your personal details and know where you live, you'll think twice about participating in live radio or tv phone-in programs and oppose government doings. Criticize the government and you'll have the Zambian "FBI" with search warrants at your door and harassing you. This move should have been opposed in my view.

You will all agree that all our mobile prividers have roamimng agreements with foreign ountries who have similar legislation. I cannot put it past ZICTA that they have been "bullied" into complying with their terms or else loose thier roaming agreements with their countries. I watch alot of action movies and I know a mobile hone can be used to detonate a WMD. So the theory is anyone can go to these countries with a Zambian SIM and do the unthinkable. The bugger must be traced somehow even if you live on Hse No. 1244D John laing

This is invasion of privacy the idea behind it is most likely that of tapping into conversations of targeted individuals. Does one expect the many people in rural areas privileged to have a phone to travel to town centers for registration? The move by ZICTA is uncalled for and is meant to intimidate mobile phone users!

i don't understand how this applies to zambian subscribers where most if not all phone users pre-pay for their services

in markets where there are contracts with providers i understand because they have to bill them for usage.

zicta isn't making a very good case explaining the need for registration. there's really nothing to worry about just because providers having one's personal information, but because of they way they are doing it,users are assuming the worst.

if you're currently unemployed, there's a gig for you, so instead of sitting there with your phone whining, start looking for ways you can make money by being the one registering users because there's gonna be long lines, you know that panic that sets in with mob psychology in zambia

ZICTA directs all mobile operators to start SIM card registrations (lsk times)

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority -ZICTA- has directed all mobile cell phone subscribers to start registering Mobile Subscriber Identity Module -SIM- cards.

ZICTA Public Relations Officer Chisha Malunda says the directive is with immediate.

A deadline will be announced later and after which all SIM cards that will not be registered will be deactivated.

Ms Malunda says the directive is in line with ZICTA’s compliance with the Information Communication Technologies (ICT) law of 2009 and the Statutory Instrument on the Registration of Electronic Communication Apparatus No. 65 of 2011.

She says in a statement to ZNBC News that the registration will apply to each network SIM Card on pre-paid, post paid platforms and existing individual and corporate subscribers.

Ms Malunda says the Registration process will be administered by each Mobile Service Provider.

She says the details to be submitted will include Full name, National Registration Card Number, Driving license (for Zambian subscribers), passport or work-permit number (for Non Zambia Subscribers), Physical address.

Dear Zambia,

I'm sure you have heard that ZICTA has now made it mandatory for mobile service providers to collect personal identification information from subscribers. This in effect means that if you own a mobile phone and an active simcard, you will need to register your personal details as well as submit copies of ID documents like passport or NRC to the network you are on.

What do you think? Is this a welcome move? Should international companies have access to our personal identification documents?
