Migration of Zambia Online Email Service

Postby admin » 5th June 2015, 14:40

Dear Zambia,

Due to the increasing problem of spam emails being sent out from many Zambia Online email boxes by spammers and scammers, we wish to inform all our esteemed Zambia Online email subscribers that we shall be discontinuing the free email service hosted by Google after nine years and we shall be switching to our own paid email service with effect from Saturday 13th June 2015. We sent an email to all our subscribers on 28th May 2015 to this effect.

In order for you to maintain your Zambia Online mailbox, you shall be required to pay K120 (One hundred and twenty Kwacha) PER YEAR for your mailbox (about $16 per year). This is to deter scammers and spammers who rely on free email services.

Everyone who makes the payment shall have their existing mailbox with all emails, contacts and calendar items imported into the new system. Due to technical compatibility issues, we cannot import the other Google services such as Google Groups, Google Plus, Google Drive, etc. You need to back up your information from these other Google services.

Kindly make payments as soon as possible to ensure your mailbox is preserved in the new system. Once the paid accounts have been migrated, passwords shall be reset and we shall inform you how to login into the new system and set your password. We shall continue offering our email service to any new paying subscribers.

You can make your payments by either depositing the K120 into our account or making a direct funds transfer (see details below) or by using your Credit/Debit card. We are setting up an online payment system and will advise accordingly. We shall not accept monthly payments. Please send proof of payment such as a photo or scanned copy of the deposit slip to admin <at> zambia <dot> co <dot> zm if you use the bank account and state for which emails you are paying.

If you require any clarifications, you can call us on +260955819937 or email us on admin <at> zambia <dot> co <dot> zm.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. IS THIS A 419 NIGERIAN SCAM?

No. We posted a notice concerning the migration on the Zambia Online website where you all signed up for your email accounts. We also posted on our Facebook page. The links are:

The phone number we put in the email we sent to you is listed on the contact page on Zambia Online.

2. THE NOTICE IS TOO SHORT

We apologize for this as the circumstances we found ourselves in were also quite abrupt. However, we are working hard to extend the deadline beyond 13th June 2015.

3. THE PAYPAL SYSTEM IS FAILING TO ACCEPT MY PAYMENT

We have been advised by Paypal that our Merchant Account in their system does not accept payments in Zambia because our laws and systems are not yet fully compliant with international standards. This was not clear when setting up the account and we are currently working on an alternative payment solution involving a different provider and we shall advise accordingly.

4. WHY DON'T YOU CONTINUE GIVING FREE EMAILS LIKE GMAIL OR YAHOO?

We cannot use advertising to support free emails the way Google does because we do not have millions of mailboxes and the number of advertisers in Zambia is small. The paid service was the only option we had, otherwise all of you would have lost your emails when our system was shut down by Google.

5. WILL MY EMAIL ADDRESS REMAIN THE SAME IN THE NEW SYSTEM?

Absolutely! All your previous emails, contacts and calendar items will also be imported unchanged into the new system.

6. CAN I GET ANOTHER MAILBOX?

Yes. You can sign up for as many as you want as long as you pay for them.

7. IS THE K120 PAYMENT FOR ALL MY MAILBOXES?

No. It is for EACH mailbox because each one occupies its own space.

8. WILL MY PASSWORD REMAIN THE SAME?

No. It will change to a temporary one in the new system because it is technically not possible to import the passwords into the new system. You shall receive an email with a temporary password before the change over.

9. I CANNOT REACH YOUR NUMBER

We appologise as we are receiving many calls. You can also email us on admin <at> zambia <dot> co <dot> zm or send a text.

10. IS IT ADVISABLE FOR ME TO BACKUP MY EMAILS IN MY OUTLOOK?

Yes, we recommend that as another extra layer of safety. However, we can assure you all that all your emails are safe and we are working with Google to make a successful migration into the new system.

11. I USED MY ZAMBIA ONLINE ACCOUNT TO SET UP MY ANDROID DEVICE. WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

Unfortunately, your account will be deleted in the Google system. You will need to create a new GMail account to connect your Android device to.

12. WHY CAN'T YOU REMAIN IN THE GOOGLE SYSTEM?

This was our first choice but Google charges $50 per year per mailbox which is more than three times what we are charging ($16 per year per mailbox). We did not think it would be affordable to most people.

13. WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY DATA IN GOOGLE DRIVE, PICASA, GOOGLE PLUS, ETC?

It will all be deleted. Make a backup.

Why are you asking for users to send you their passwords? Isn't there another way to do this without revealing usernames and passwords?

Thanks.
