Pick n Pay expired goods

Postby Kloks » 30th November 2010, 13:21

Dear Zambia,

On Saturday 27th November, I bought some Cerelac infant formula from Pick n Pay around lunch time. When I got back into the car, my wife had a look and showed me that it had expired on 3rd November 2010. I was taken aback by this since so far my experience with them has been positive. She then told me that the Saturday before (20th) she had also bought the same expired good but only realised after the baby had eaten 3 times from the tin. Luckily, she still had the receipt and I went back and complained to the manage on duty (Lillian). She immediately gave me two new tins to replace the expired ones. I would advise all of you to keep checking the expire dates before you buy. Of course I dont like this since I expect supermarkets to just be checking these things. My wife is the only one who noticed this.

The same day coincidentally, I bought new Energizer AA batteries in an 9 pack. The price was K38,800 but after scanning, they charged me K39,900. I was not happy but they refunded me the difference after I told them. Again I hate the fact that I have to keep checking. Someone I know had one product scanned twice and they only realised at home and went back for a refund.

So people, watch out.

Sooswe,

Why hit on the guy so hard when he has admitted his folly. He trusts Pick n Pay so much that he does not care to check the product he his buying. Next time Kloks be smart and check for the expiry dates of food stuffs you are buying and if you can not see a clearly marked label on the product you want, please pick a different one with a proper expiry information label.

Kloks,

this is not gospel but I thought maybe you might use it. My guess is that your baby was in no danger after eating that expired formula. But it is always good to play it safe and avoid expired foods. here are some tips.

1. Sell by/pull by date: This is the date that stores pay attention to. If an item hasn't sold by this date, they're supposed to pull it from the shelves. Don't be afraid to buy something on or right before its 'sell by' date; it'll still be good for a while if it's stored properly. How long? That depends on the item.

2. Best if used before/by: Until this date, your food's guaranteed to be at peak freshness if it's been properly stored. After that date, it'll still be safe to consume for a while but the quality won't be as high. So your orange juice won't have that "fresh-squeezed taste" anymore. And if you've ever taken a swig of diet soda after the 'best by' date stamped on the bottle, you're familiar with the unmistakable taste of decomposing artificial sweetener. Yum.

3. Expiration date: This is your food's last hurrah. If you haven't consumed it by this date, toss it. It could make you sick if you try eating or drinking it.

Sooswe, you obviously have nothing sensible to say and you are in violation of the forum rules. Your attitude leave much to be desired.
