A SEA of mourners clad in black turned up to give former First Lady Betty Kaunda a heroine’s send-off at the family’s State Lodge home in Lusaka yesterday.

Her husband, Dr Kaunda, courageously fought back tears as his wife’s casket was lowered into the grave after 66 straight years of marriage.

Defence chiefs in immaculate battle ceremonial dress from the army, air force, national service, police, prisons and special division also graced the burial.

The defence chiefs had black ‘mourning’ bands around their arms.

Diplomats and other foreign representatives were also present at perhaps one of the biggest funerals in town since independence in 1964.
