INSPECTOR general of police Francis Kabonde says the police service hopes to recruit more police officer to beef up security ahead of the 2011 general elections. Mr Kabonde said the service hopes Government will allow it to recruit more officers to maintain peace and order ahead of the elections.
He said this in Lusaka yesterday when newly appointed Minister of Home Affairs Mkhondo Lungu addressed senior officers at Force Headquarters. Mr Kabonde said currently, the service only has 15,000 police officers countrywide, adding that this number is insufficient to safeguard the 12 million Zambians.
Mr Kabonde said although the police service is training 1,500 officers, the manpower is still insufficient. He said the ratio is one policeman to 800 people, which is against the internationally accepted one to 100 people.
“The 1,500 officers who we are training are a drop in the ocean because we are looking at the 12 million Zambians.
