I’d no hand in Mpombo conviction, says BandaBy Times ReporterPRESIDENT Rupiah Banda has said he was not in any way involved in securing the conviction of former Defence minister George Mpombo.Responding to questions from journalists at Lusaka International Airport yesterday before departure for Botswana, President Banda said politicians and civil society organisations alleging that he was interfering in the running of the Judiciary and influenced the conviction of Mr Mpombo were lying.Mr Banda said he was not even following the proceedings of the case in which Mr Mpombo had been dragged to court for issuing a cheque on an insufficiently-funded account.”You know they are lying. I am not the police or the Judiciary. I was not following it (case) and I have nothing to do with it,” the president said when asked to comment on accusations by some politicians that he was applying double standards in the administration of the justice system in Zambia.
