More female judges appointed to Supreme, High Courts

PARLIAMENT yesterday ratified the appointment of four judges to sit on the Supreme Court and High court benches. Those ratified are Justice Elizabeth Nkombo Chona Muyovwe to serve as Supreme Court judge, Judge Judy Zulu Mulongoti, Anne Mwewa Sitali and Mary Chitalu Mulanda as High Court Judges.
And members of Parliament have praised President Banda for increasing the number of women in decision-making positions in the country, particularly the judiciary.
Luapula MP Peter Machungwa said President Banda’s administration has demonstrated its commitment to addressing gender imbalances in work places.
He was contributing to the motion to adopt the report of the Parliamentary select committee appointed to scrutinise the Presidential appointments of the four judges.
Dr Machungwa said men have in the past dominated decision-making positions but that this is slowly changing.
He said the newly-appointed judges should assist the judiciary to expedite the disposal of cases.
