Airtel workers threaten to strike in 7 days


Airtel workers in Lusaka have given management seven days ultimatum to improve their working conditions.

The workers are upset that they are only given 40 minutes lunch break and that there are too many foreigners who have taken up positions which can be handled by qualified Zambians.

A workers representative Charity Mulenga Lombe said ‘we want the government and management of Airtel to look into the plight of us workers.

She said if the complaints are not addressed by next Thursday, the workers will go on strike.

Lombe said Aitel worker have no union representation as this is not allowed and that there is rampant casualization.

She said employees who work in shifts are only given three days to rest in a month.

She revealed that some workers in the Call-centre are paid K400, 000 ONLY

‘Airtel Zambia does not look into the welfare of workers. The general pay to lower level workers is low,’ she said.
