State revokes RSZ deal

GOVERNMENT has revoked the concession agreement of the Railway Systems of Zambia (RSZ) and placed it under the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) with immediate effect.
Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda announced the revocation of the agreement yesterday, saying management of the railway firm had reverted to ZRL for the first time since 2003.
In the light of this development, the minister has assured the nation and cooperating partners that Government remained committed to ensuring that Zambia remained a conducive destination for genuine investment, while ensuring the interests of the country were not undermined by impropriety.
“On behalf of the Government, I wish to inform the nation that Cabinet has decided to compulsorily acquire the concession rights that were granted to Railway Systems of Zambia. This has been done in accordance with Cabinet’s mandate to safeguard the interests of the people of Zambia.
