Govt, Luapula Water seal $40 million deal

GOVERNMENT has signed a US$40 million on-lending and grant agreement with Luapula Water and Sewerage Company for implementing water and sanitation programmes

in four districts of the province.
The districts are Mansa, Samfya, Kawambwa and Mwense.
The agreement was signed here yesterday shortly after President Lungu officially opened the Luapula Expo and Investment Conference.
Minister of Finance Felix Mutati signed on behalf of Government while Luapula Water and Sewerage Company managing director Kenneth Chense signed for the water utility firm.
Ministry of Finance spokesperson Chileshe Kandeta announced this in a statement in Mansa yesterday.
“Of the total amount signed, US$33.5 million has been on-lent from the government to the Luapula Water and Sewerage Company while a further US$6.7 million has been given as a grant,” Mr Kandeta said.
He said on-lending and grant agreements signify the fulfilment of Government’s promise to tackle water and sanitation challenges in Mansa, Mwense, Samfya and Kawambwa districts.
“The principal loan was obtained by Government from the African Development Bank under the Integrated Small Towns Water and Sanitation Programme,” Mr Kandeta said.
