ONE person died on the spot while 12 others sustained minor injuries when a Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) passenger train they were travelling on derailed in Mazabuka yesterday.
The accident happened around 12:00 hours at Magoye-Kaleya Trust when the Livingstone-bound Michael Chilufya Sata train from Lusaka careered off the railway line. Southern Province commissioner of police Bonny Kapeso said in an interview that the deceased, only identified as Mutinta, is a mother of two and a casual worker at ZRL in Livingstone. “I can confirm that 12 people have sustained minor injuries and no one has been admitted to hospital yet,” he said. ZRL head of public relations Caristo Chitamfya said a comprehensive statement will be issued in due course.
