The President has come to the defense of his loyalist of allies – the Chinese Government. Their presence in Zambia and indeed Africa more broadly has been a source of tension for many years with critics arguing they are in essence our new colonial masters – taking away jobs, resources and monopolizing industry, others view their investment as a success and necessary for the continent’s growth. Either way, their involvement in government contracts and elections has long been of concern. Today President Lungu showed just how serious he is about keeping them on side by threatening those who speak out against them with the ‘full force of the law.’ This comes after Minister of Justice Given Lubinda spoke at this year’s Chinese spring festival and condemned individuals exhibiting tendencies of xenophobia against Chinese nationals in Zambia, preaching the message of isolation must be condemned, let’s condemn any sign of racism we are one people. The Chinese Ambassador to Zambia HE Mr. Yang Youming assures Zambians living in his country of protection and assistance when in need. Meanwhile, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe said it is folly for any politician to advocate for the removal of Chinese nationals from Zambia.
