The Governance, Elections, Advocacy Research Services (GEARS) has condemned the recent detention of defunct National Democratic Congress-NDC-President, Chishimba Kambwili in Kitwe. It is alleged that Dr. Kambwili while on his way to hold a rally decided to pass through Chisokone market in Kitwe to buy fish and was later followed at his lodge after the rally by police who charged him with conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. Dr. Kambwili was only released after paying an admission of guilt fine after being detained for about four hours. GEARS Executive Director, McDonald Chipenzi in an interview with Muvi TV news says it was not necessary for police to arrest him as such acts are against every citizen’s right to freedom. He says if police continue on the path of arresting opposition political party leaders, it will send a wrong message to the international community that Zambia is a dictatorship.
